The Mind-Body Approach to Health

There are more elements involved in the development of disease than just the physical ones.

My work is based on the premise that humans possess an energy framework that determines every cell’s structure and function. In other words, it is based on this blueprint of information that cells know who they are and what they have got to do. When the information in this framework is distorted through emotional distress, inner crises, trauma or negative beliefs, cells get aberrant messages and are then prone to behave in abnormal ways. Endocrine glands secrete more or less than they should, neurons fire when they shouldn’t, the immune system attacks harmless molecules or even the body’s own cells. When severe distortions of information happen, cells can even lose their distinctive features and multiply to form a tumour.

Guilt, resentment, relationships involving loss of dignity, inability to express oneself are just a few examples of factors that can distort our energy framework and make us more susceptible to illness.

In my practice, I have been interested to ascertain that the parts affected and the type of disease we manifest are not chosen by chance. Traditional Chinese Medicine speaks about our organs and body parts having not only a physical, but also a consciousness function and even today, we associate the liver with anger and the heart with love. The Indian sages brought up the concept of the charkas as energy centres involved in bodily functions with also specific psychological and spiritual purposes. By using a combination of the two systems, it is often possible to interpret the messages from the body.

I would also like to introduce the idea that symptoms are mostly messages from a body desperately trying to tell us something after having been ignored for quite a while. Unfortunately, in our modern world, we have lost touch with our bodies. We tend to oversee the initial signs of discomfort, and we keep the same nasty habits, or stay in the same toxic relationships, until one day we start developing symptoms or overt disease. One example would be that of a corporate consuming a diet that doesn’t benefit his body, fast food ridden of nutrients, eaten quickly in the car between stressful meetings. If the early episodes of indigestion are not addressed and the habit persists, heartburn will develop. Our friend is likely to get medication to suppress his heartburn, but his condition will worsen (think high blood pressure or heart disease) unless he changes his diet and lifestyle.

Having trained extensively and worked for a number of years as a medical doctor, I have come to realise that a health condition that happens more than once and chronic diseases stem from a pattern that deserves investigation.  Medication and surgery are extremely valuable, lifesaving tools in managing severe, acute health problems, but when there is time, personal transformation is a more profound  and  definitive approach. Rather than accumulating symptoms and suffering on top of all the adverse effects of medication, I prefer to address underlying crises and facilitate the changes that allow the body to undertake its own healing.

Finally, healing requires true transformation. Whether it is habits, beliefs, relationship dynamics, or our connection to the community that underlies our ill health, change is the only way to stop the cycle off illness. But this can only result from becoming aware and responsible for one’s health. My role as a practitioner is to help you discover yourself and to facilitate change.

But how?

BodyTalk

Many of us know we need to sort out some aspect of ourselves, yet we wouldn’t know where to start.

All of our parts need to be connected and synchronous for the body to function optimally, yet as mentioned before the many stresses in our lives create some distortions in our informational framework. BodyTalk utilises muscle feedback to uncover, layer by layer, the areas of the body and mind affected and the conflicts underlying the abnormalities in the network. It is a technique that interacts directly with the subconscious mind and has some immediate effects at that level. For this reason, it can perfectly be used with children. Some other changes identified during the procedure do however require a conscious decision to change, so it is up to the individual or the parents in the case of a child to modify their lives to restore the harmony within their bodies.

Psych-K

Our beliefs determine our attitude, our actions and the world we create for ourselves. Yet most of our beliefs are engrained in our subconscious mind and are difficult to clear unless we shift them at that level.  Psych-K is a simple yet effective way to free the mind from negative belief patterns and focus its full intention on positive objectives. The process is subconscious, typically painless and emotionally safe, as blockages are identified and cleared almost instantaneously through neuromuscular feedback, and new lines of patterns of thinking are established automatically.

Past Life Regression

During profound relaxation, we can ask the subconscious mind to access and retrieve from the Collective Unconscious the life story or stories that are somehow related to the challenges we face in our current existence. Whether we believe in past lives and karma or not, the purpose of the exercise is to explore the experiences that might have originated our struggles, and the beliefs that were formed based on those experiences. The conflict identified  is subsequently resolved by doing belief work or even with the help homeopathic remedies. On occasion, the regression will take the person to witness the life of someone who is perceived as an inspiring model and can become the guide for the changes to be effected.

Other Therapies

I work at Mother-Well Holistic Health, an integral health centre in Auckland, New Zealand, that gathers many practitioners with different approaches to illness. Our team works in collaboration and includes a general medicine practice, naturopaths, herbalists, osteopaths, midwives, counsellors, acupuncturists, massage therapists and bodyworkers. I have learned that most patients I see do benefit from medical, nutritional, herbal or physical support to facilitate their process and it is a blessing to be able work alongside so many qualified, caring professionals when necessary.

Disclaimer

As I am not registered with the New Zealand Medical Council, I cannot provide the services a medical doctor would normally offer, such as examinations, laboratory testing or prescriptions, so I usually work in conjunction with my patients' GP. Please contact a registered doctor if you are not under the care of one.
